Edinburgh · Old Town · Below the Royal Mile
The vaults under South Bridge, shown by two companies in different sections, and a 17th-century street sealed under the City Chambers. Which one to book, how long each takes and who it suits.
“Underground Edinburgh” means two things: the vaults under South Bridge, which two companies show in different sections, and the Real Mary King’s Close, a street buried under the City Chambers. No single tour visits both. For a ghost tour, book the Underground Vaults Evening Ghost Tour with Whisky: two hours with a Mercat Tours storyteller through the Old Town and down into the Blair Street Underground Vaults, ending with a drink in a haunted cellar, from $42 per person and rated 4.7 from 2,852 reviews (checked October 2026). For the most reviewed vaults tour, take Auld Reekie Tours’ hour in the South Bridge vaults from $32. For history rather than ghosts, book the Real Mary King's Close.
South Bridge was finished in 1788 on nineteen stone arches, and around 120 chambers were built into it. Tradesmen used them first, then the city’s poorest people, until they were filled with rubble and forgotten; they were dug out again from 1985. The history of the vaults tells the whole story.
Two companies show different sections today. Auld Reekie Tours takes groups in from its meeting point at 300 Lawnmarket on the Royal Mile. Mercat Tours has its own section, the Blair Street Underground Vaults, which it describes as the city’s deepest and largest, with a small museum and a short film inside; its tours start at the Mercat Cross, opposite the City Chambers, and use audio headsets so everyone in the group can hear the guide.
A 17th-century street, closed over when the Royal Exchange, now the City Chambers, was built on top of it from 1753. It is a one-hour guided tour run by The Real Mary King’s Close itself, from Warriston’s Close on the Royal Mile, and it is social history more than a ghost tour: the families who lived there and the plague years. Children under 5 are not admitted. Prices and times are in the Mary King’s Close tickets guide.

It depends on what you want down there. For ghost stories with the most atmosphere, the Mercat evening tour with its drink at the end. For the vaults in an hour, the Auld Reekie tour, the most reviewed underground tour in Edinburgh on GetYourGuide. For a fright, Auld Reekie’s late-night Terror Tour, which is for over-18s and includes its torture exhibition. With children, Mercat’s kids’ tour lets them handle objects found in the vaults, and Mary King’s Close works from age 5.

Not as a sightseer: the tour companies run the visits to both the vaults and Mary King’s Close. Of the underground tours on GetYourGuide, the cheapest is the Old Town and Underground Ghost Tour from $22, and the free walking tours we know of stay above ground. Wear shoes with grip, because the vault floors are uneven and the steps down are steep in places, and bring a layer: it is cool underground in every season.

"This was such an amazing experience! The first half was a walking tour filled with fascinating history, and then we got to go into the historic vaults—which was absolutely unforgettable. Our guide, Steph, was incredible. Her energy, knowledge, and storytelling made the whole tour come alive. We learned so much and had an awesome time. I would 1000% recommend this tour to anyone visiting!"

"our guide veni was brilliant at telling the stories of old Scottish times"
"Marina was a fantastic guide! She was so animated and really added to the tour. I loved learning about Edinburgh history, as well as its haunting history. I also appreciated having headsets making it easy to hear our guide. This was honestly a step above other tours where we spend half the time trying to decipher what was said from the back of the group. Thanks."
"The tour was highly informative and the narration was great. Totally loved the experience and if you’re into ghosts and horror, this tour is should be in your todo list."

For ghost stories, the Underground Vaults Evening Ghost Tour with Whisky by Mercat Tours: two hours, the Blair Street Underground Vaults and a drink in a haunted cellar, rated 4.7. For the vaults in an hour, Auld Reekie Tours' Underground Vaults Tour, the most reviewed. For social history, the Real Mary King's Close.
The vaults are around 120 chambers built into the arches of South Bridge, finished in 1788, used by tradesmen and then the city's poorest people; the tours there are ghost tours. Mary King's Close is a 17th-century street closed over when the Royal Exchange, now the City Chambers, was built on it from 1753; its tour is about the people who lived there.
Yes, if you want to see the Old Town from below as well as above. Visits to the vaults are run by the tour companies, so a tour is how you get in. From $32 for an hour with Auld Reekie Tours, or from $42 for the two-hour Mercat evening tour with a drink (checked October 2026).
Not as a sightseer. Visits to the vaults are run by the tour companies, and Mary King's Close is seen on its own guided tour. The cheapest underground ghost tour on GetYourGuide starts at $21 (checked October 2026).
Not that we have found: the free walking tours we know of stay above ground. The lowest-priced underground tour we list is the Old Town and Underground Ghost Tour from $21 per person, an hour in the vaults and the closes.
From one hour to two. Auld Reekie's Underground Vaults Tour and the Real Mary King's Close take an hour, the late-night Terror Tour and Mercat's multi-sensory tours 75 minutes, the vaults-and-Greyfriars tour 1.5 hours and the Mercat evening tour with whisky two hours.
About 120 chambers were built into the arches of South Bridge, which stands on nineteen stone arches, only one of them visible over the Cowgate. Different tour companies show different sections: Auld Reekie Tours from the Royal Mile, and Mercat Tours its Blair Street Underground Vaults.
Some are. Mercat Tours runs a kids' multi-sensory tour where children can handle objects found in the vaults, and the Real Mary King's Close admits children from age 5. The late-night Terror Tour is for adults only, and the evening tour with whisky serves alcohol, with soft drinks too.
Auld Reekie Tours' Late-Night Underground Vaults Terror Tour, for over-18s, which goes into the South Bridge vaults late in the evening and includes the torture exhibition. Mercat's evening tours lean on storytelling and atmosphere instead.
Shoes with grip, because the floors are uneven and the steps down are steep in places, and a layer, because it is cool underground in every season. The what to wear guide has more.
