What to Wear on an Edinburgh Ghost Tour

Practical packing guide for Edinburgh ghost tours — footwear for cobblestones and vault floors, layers for the underground chill, and what to bring by season.

Updated May 2026

Every operator who runs Edinburgh ghost tours publishes the same footwear guidance: closed-toe, flat, non-slip shoes. This guide explains why — and what else to bring by season and by physical condition.

The Short Version

  • Shoes: closed-toe, flat, with grip — always, regardless of season
  • Layers: bring one warm layer year-round; the vaults are noticeably cooler than the street
  • Waterproof: pack a compact one from October through April
  • Bag: small or none — the vault passages are narrow

Footwear: Why Operators Are Unanimous

Three different surfaces form the route:

The Royal Mile and Old Town closes: Historic granite setts — cobblestones. They are uneven, wet when it rains, and notorious for catching heels. The Royal Mile runs about 1.5 km with an average gradient of 4%, meaning it tilts. Smooth-soled shoes are genuinely dangerous on wet setts.

Greyfriars Kirkyard: Uneven paths with some steps, which can become muddy after rain. The lighting during evening tours is dim. Flat, grippy soles are the only sensible option.

The South Bridge Vaults: Stone floors, uneven and damp. Entry involves a roughly 2-foot step down at the doorway, followed by a tight spiral staircase. Inside, the ceiling in main chambers is around 6 feet; narrower connecting passages require ducking for taller visitors. The floor stays wet from moisture seeping through the bridge surface above.

What operators specifically rule out: heels, sandals, flip-flops, smooth dress soles, and oversized boots that will not fit the spiral staircase comfortably.

Walking trainers, low hiking shoes, or sturdy flat boots all work well. Rubber-soled shoes that you are comfortable walking 2–3 km in are the target.

The Vault Temperature

The South Bridge Vaults are noticeably cooler than the street above — stone walls with no heating and limited ventilation hold a persistent damp chill year-round. Water still drips through the bridge surface after heavy rain. Multiple operators and visitor accounts describe cold gusts in the lower chambers.

This applies in August as well. The street above may be 18°C; the vaults will feel several degrees colder. Bring at least one warm layer regardless of the season.

What to Wear by Season

Summer (June–August)

Edinburgh summer days reach daytime highs around 17–19°C — cool by European standards, but warm enough that you will be comfortable in a single layer on the Royal Mile. The vault section will feel significantly colder, so pack a mid-layer (fleece, light down jacket, or a second wool layer) that you can put on underground and remove when you resurface.

August is one of Edinburgh’s wetter months despite being peak tourist season. A packable waterproof takes up minimal bag space and covers the walk between sites if it showers.

LayerSummer recommendation
BaseT-shirt or light long-sleeve
MidFleece or light jacket (for vaults)
OuterPackable waterproof
FeetTrainers or flat boots with grip

Autumn (September–October)

October ghost tours run in temperatures of 8–14°C on the street. The vault section will feel colder than this. A full warm layer worn from the start of the tour is the right approach rather than carrying something to add underground.

October is Edinburgh’s wettest month, with around 18 rainy days on average. A proper waterproof is not optional in October — a light shower shell at minimum.

LayerAutumn recommendation
BaseLong-sleeve top
MidFleece or wool jumper
OuterWaterproof jacket
FeetSturdy waterproof walking shoes or ankle boots
ExtraScarf; light gloves for late October

Winter (November–February)

Street temperatures run between 2°C and 7°C. Winter ghost tours are the most atmospheric but require the most preparation. Dress as you would for a cold evening city walk — multiple thin layers that trap heat, a windproof outer shell, and warm extremities.

LayerWinter recommendation
BaseThermal or merino long-sleeve
MidHeavy fleece or down jacket
OuterWaterproof windproof jacket
FeetWaterproof ankle boots or sturdy insulated boots
ExtraHat, scarf, gloves

Spring (March–May)

March and April are transitional. April is among Edinburgh’s driest months and May is among the sunniest, but temperatures on the street are still only 10–15°C and the vaults will feel cold. Pack a mid-layer and a packable waterproof for March and April; by late May you may not need the waterproof but the vault layer remains essential.

Physical Access Considerations

The vault entry involves a two-foot step down at the doorway, followed immediately by a single narrow spiral staircase. This is Edinburgh Old Town’s standard “turnpike” stair: tight, stone, worn smooth in places, with low headroom. Anyone with knee, hip, or ankle issues should factor this in.

Inside, the tour involves standing for around 45 minutes on uneven stone floors. Comfortable, supportive footwear is not just an atmospheric recommendation — it is a physical necessity.

If the underground section genuinely concerns you, the Dark Secrets of the Old Town ghost walk is an above-ground alternative (cobblestones still apply, but no stairs or low ceilings). See the ghost tour vs ghost walk guide for the full comparison.

Bag Guidance

The vault passages are narrow; large backpacks become obstructions. A small daypack worn on the front, a crossbody bag, or a jacket with pockets is the right approach. You will need both hands free at the vault entry step and staircase.

The One Thing Everyone Forgets

Even in August — even on a warm Edinburgh evening — the vaults will be colder than you expect. Every account from visitors who did not bring a layer mentions being cold underground. A fleece you can tie around your waist on the Royal Mile costs nothing in the moment and makes the underground section substantially more comfortable.
